We've all been there... We've all moved into a fabulous new home to find out it was filled with elements that impeded daily tasks or prevented us from living the way we really wanted to.Here are my
House Hunting and Houzz Hunting- Home is all about style!
It's crazy to see how closely interior design searches track with real esate, but it makes sense. If we are dreaming of a new home, chances are it's because of a major life event, we've out-grown our home, or we want something new and beautiful. I know countless people who started house hunting after spening significant amounts of time on Houzz and Pinterest, because they noticed the architectural features in the spaces they were attracted to and realized their current home was a far cry from what they really wanted.
Think about it. When you are house hunting- you research interior design; when you find homes you like- you research interior design; when your offer is accepted- you research design; and of course, when you move in- you research design. It helps us to make sense of the house, see past the owner's belongings, figure out layouts in tricky spaces, and find ways to make it our own.
It also helps us to understand ourselves, our family, and what we want. Buying a new home isn't just about a new house- it's a fresh start for our family, because a new space makes us live, work, and interact with each other in different ways. It's also a fresh start for new adventures, because we're near new shops, amenities, and parks. It's also a fresh start for our social life, because we'll be able to meet so many new people through our neighbors. Decorating our homes is instrinsic to so much of that-- a new style can give us a new identity and self-confidence; a beautiful home directly affects our personal happiness as well as that of our family, and it encourages us to entertain and be more social, which strengthens our connections with others.
I always encourage my buyers to share their Houzz Ideabooks and Pinterest boards with me before our initial consultation. Much like my design work, I like to meet with my buyers before visiting houses, because it lets me get to know my clients, their values, how they live, challenges their current house has, and how we can find a new home that allows them to live the way that's most beneficial to everyone. We may find a house that is perfect in every way, but needs a bit of love. If you've never upgraded a bathroom or given a kitchen a face-lift before, the idea of going through that on a new house can be daunting-- there are so many decisions to be made and a lot of research and planning to do. House hunting with a REALTOR who is also a designer makes all of that easy and fun. You're going to research design while house hunting, so hunting with a designer just raises the bar on what you can achieve.
