Why We Choose to Live in The Western Side of the Triangle (Chapel Hill, Pittsboro, & Beyond)

The region known as the Triangle earned its name from the three cities that form its shape—Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. Technically, this included two cities and one town, but over time, this area has evolved into something much larger. The growth has been exponential, with small towns such as Cary, Apex, Morrisville, and Holly Springs rapidly expanding in size and importance. Chapel Hill, once a focal point, now finds itself smaller in comparison to these fast-developing locales.

In fact, the growth of the Triangle has been so significant that it has now split into two distinct Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs)—Raleigh and Durham-Chapel Hill. The area we consider the "western side" of the Triangle encompasses not only Durham and Chapel Hill but also the surrounding counties of Orange and Chatham, along with parts of Durham County. This side of the Triangle also includes the charming towns of Carrboro, Pittsboro, and Hillsborough.

Recently, our team attended the 18th Annual State of the Community presentation hosted by the Carolina Chamber, where comprehensive local data reaffirmed precisely why we (and others) continue to choose the western side of the Triangle as home. The data vividly illustrated that our community remains committed to top-tier education and healthcare, enjoys strong economic health, and maintains an exceptional quality of life.

Educational Excellence as a Foundation

First and foremost, education is a cornerstone of this region. The universities that anchor this area—UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke University—are renowned for their commitment to academic excellence. UNC, as the state's flagship institution, and Duke, as one of the top private universities in the nation, help cultivate a culture of learning that permeates the entire region. This dedication to education not only elevates the universities themselves but also sets a high standard for the quality of schools throughout the area.

  • Chapel Hill: 77% of residents hold a bachelor's degree or higher.

  • Carrboro: 70% of residents hold a bachelor's degree or higher.

  • Orange County: 62% of residents hold a bachelor's degree or higher.

These numbers far exceed state and national averages, highlighting a deep-rooted commitment to educational excellence.

Outstanding Healthcare System

The healthcare system here is equally impressive. UNC Hospital stands as the state hospital for North Carolina, drawing patients from across the state for its exceptional specialty care. Duke University Hospital is consistently ranked among the top private hospitals in the country, further establishing this area as a hub for medical expertise and cutting-edge research.

Growing Older and Staying Put: Aging in Place

An important and telling trend in our community is the significant growth of the senior population. Between 2010 and 2023, the proportion of residents aged 65 and older grew notably across our region:

  • Orange County’s 65+ population increased from 10% to 17% of total residents.

  • Chatham County saw an even more substantial shift, with seniors now comprising 26% of residents, up from 18%.

People come here—and they stay. The combination of healthcare access, community spirit, and lifestyle amenities makes this an ideal place to comfortably age in place.

Safety & Security: A Top Priority

Orange County and its towns—Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Hillsborough—consistently report some of the lowest crime rates in North Carolina. Chatham County follows suit. For families, retirees, and young professionals alike, the peace of mind that comes with safe neighborhoods is invaluable.

Ideal Climate, Scenery, and Location

Another benefit of living here is the climate. We are blessed with four distinct seasons, each bringing its own charm. From the mild, pleasant spring to the crisp, colorful autumn, the variety of weather keeps life in this region interesting and vibrant.

The location is also ideal for those who love to explore. The Triangle offers a perfect balance with both the beach and the mountains only a 2-3 hour drive away. Whether it's a weekend getaway to the coast or a trip to the Blue Ridge Mountains, you can easily enjoy the best of both worlds.

Strong Real Estate Market Reflects Desirability

Real estate trends reflect desirability. Despite broader economic shifts, demand remains high:

  • Median home price in Orange County (2025): $454,000

home sale prices in orange county from 2015 to 2025 Jan-March.

  • Median home price in Chatham County (2025): $659,995

home sale prices in chatham county from 2015 to 2025 Jan-March.

People aren’t just moving here—they’re investing in the lifestyle.

The State of the Community presentation confirmed what we experience every day: the western side of the Triangle offers the perfect blend of education, healthcare, economic vitality, safety, and lifestyle.

It's no wonder that once people find their way here, they don’t want to leave.
