Real estate taxes in NC are due by January 5. For potential tax deductions, consider making your payment before year-end. Taxes are due on any real estate you own. If you escrow for taxes with your mortgage company, the mortgage company should make the tax payment for you. If you do not escrow, your tax bill is due.
If you bought a new property this year, taxes may be due on it. If you bought it before taxes were technically due (typically around Sept 1), then taxes most likely were not paid. Many county offices do not send a tax bill to a new property owner the year of purchase. To ensure your taxes are paid on time, follow these steps:
Check your local tax office: Verify the due date and the amount owed. You can do this online by county.
Make your payment: Submit your payment directly to your local tax office or through their online portal.
